Licensed Mental Health Counselor
Registered Play Therapist - Supervisor
Qualified Clinical Supervisor

Hello. My name is Janice March. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Clinical Supervisor with a private practice in downtown Sarasota. With more than twenty years experience working with children and adults in the Sarasota and Bradenton area, I have developed special expertise in working with families and young children experiencing social or emotional difficulties.

Is your child having problems after adoption? Aggressive or oppositional behavior in preschool or at home? Withdrawal or anger because of a divorce? Under-performance in school? Difficulty making friends? Trouble separating from family members? Self-esteem issues associated with differences or disabilities? Specific fears or phobias? Children are resilient, but sometimes they, and their parents, become overwhelmed. That's when I can help with a variety of child-focused therapies. My specialties include working with mothers and babies in the area of bonding and attachment; Play Therapy with children from the age of three; Filial Therapy, in which a parent is an active participant in the child’s therapy; Sandplay Therapy, a form of depth work that is an essentially nonverbal therapy uniquely effective with children or adults; and CPRT, Child Parent Relationship Therapy, a training program for parents to continue therapeutic practice with their children at home.

You might not be aware that licensure as a mental health counselor in the state of Florida does not require even a single course on therapy with children. But before I had completed my master’s program, I knew the area in which I wanted to work and I began specialized training in therapy with children and families. (How I came to that decision, to work with young children rather than the typical psychotherapy practice with adults, is rather a long story. If you’re interested, please go to the Personal Background page.)

I am a Registered Play Therapist, and Play Therapy Supervisor, credentials administered by The Association for Play Therapy, and an Infant Mental Health Specialist, trained in Early Childhood Mental Health and parent-child therapy through The FSU Harris Institute. In addition, I have been trained in Stanley Greenspan’s DIR/Floortime model for work with children on the autistic spectrum, and have training and experience in recognizing and treating fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. I have completed the Adoptions Certificate program of the Institute for Families, Rutgers School of Social Work, and trained extensively in working with children who have witnessed domestic violence. And for over ten years I have been a student of Jungian Sandplay Therapy, a way for child and adult clients to express feelings and thoughts directly from the unconscious, without words. Clients who have not found other approaches helpful often respond to this form of therapy.

For Registered Mental Health Counseling Interns who have completed a Master’s degree, I have been qualified by the State of Florida to supervise them for licensure. For interns interested in working with children, my supervision sessions qualify simultaneously for both state and APT supervision hours.
